Re: Q, What do you "Love " about DC?
Tue, June 26, 2007 - 6:46 AMI really enjoy biking around the city on the weekends. It's the best way to enjoy all the sights and sounds. Also the Rock Creek Park system is truly amazing! You can get "lost" in all the wilderness and momentarily forget you are actually in the middle of a large, populated city. DC is beautiful! :-)

Re: Q, What do you "Love " about DC?
Tue, June 26, 2007 - 7:40 PMthere is so very much to do! I moved here from upstate NY and have been reveling in the diverse activities that abound. Theater, hockey, music, museums, festivals, history. . .all reasonably priced, all metro accessible, what a joy. -

Re: Q, What do you "Love " about DC?
Wed, June 27, 2007 - 1:41 PMI went to a Nats game last weekend and it was a good time.
I like the weather here most of all. Especially during the spring and summer, but if you like snow, we get plenty of that in the winter months and crisp air in the fall. The biking around the Rock Creek Parkway mentioned above is cool too. -

any kind of dance, music, theatre, performance you can imagine. well, nearly.
and I love that there is a growing tribal bellydance scene.
not to mention the sideshow and burlesque movement that is gaining momentum!
it's a place of possibilities! and I'm glad I settled here -

Re: Q, What do you "Love " about DC?
Fri, June 29, 2007 - 4:50 PMI love that:
--it's a pretty city,
--it both hosts the government and is totally alien from the government,
--George W got less than 11% of the DC vote in the last election,
--there are so many hot, smart women that any fool of a guy can have a kick-ass girlfriend,
--Lincoln lived and died here,
--you can go to places in the city that make you feel like you're miles from a city,
--the Tabard Inn,
--there was once a neighborhood (around where Gonzaga HS is now) called "Swampoodle"
--people are, for the most part, so frickin' well-informed
--we all live in one of the most target-rich environments in the world, and yet nobody really blows anything up for the most part
--Sushi Taro
--the resurgence of H St.
--honkies are still a minority
--you regularly get opportunities to give famous politicians the finger
--your friends from other parts of the country / world will come visit you
--we don't have those goddamned NY cab divider partitions in our cabs
--the street plan makes logical sense. Mostly.
--it's not in any state
--Howard Stern got his start as a young asshole on DC101
--and, speaking of radio, 94.7 is really a pretty good radio station (although WCBE in Columbus is still the best station anywhere, ever)
--I can walk to where George Washington laid a cornerstone and bike to where MLK gave his "I have a dream" speech
--you can get away with bloody murder in traffic because the cops Do. Not. Care.
--Meridian Hill (Malcolm X) park
--Union Station, and the fact that it is actually convenient to catch a train to other cities
--the national Bonsai collection at the Arboretum, with living specimens going back before 1850
I mean, seriously, who could not love DC? I know people who hate it, and I can't figure out what the fuck is wrong wth them.
But you know what sucks about DC? It's really hard to find decent weed.

Re: Q, What do you "Love " about DC?
Fri, June 29, 2007 - 6:06 PMRight on, Mab! I have met more performers and other creative folks here than I did in SF. -

Re: Q, What do you "Love " about DC?
Sun, July 1, 2007 - 5:35 PMWell put, Be-In!
I like to walk around and look at gorgeous architecture in all the neighborhoods. Excellent FREE museums. Yes, Meridian Hill Park (was there today)! Urban Farmers' Markets. Public spaces and parks. Lovely tree-lined boulevards. Lots of nonprofits with idealistic folks working for them. Many fine cafes and drinking establishments. The Metro (car-free is the way to be)!
>I know people who hate it, and I can't figure out what the fuck is wrong wth them.
Me neither. They all wish they were in more "sophisticated" or "edgy" places like NYC or SF. Hell, let them move! -

Re: Q, What do you "Love " about DC?
Wed, July 4, 2007 - 11:44 AMbut what about the "attitude" that so many folks put off, the main- streaming -majority etc? -
-
Re: Q, What do you "Love " about DC?
Thu, July 5, 2007 - 10:11 AMI haven't encountered much Attitude at all. Esp. not compared to, say, NYC, where everyone walks around with a mental Fuck You sign. (And everything smells of urine). Maybe it's worse on the Hill?
Could you be more specific about what kind of Attitude(s) you've encountered?
-
Re: Q, What do you "Love " about DC?
Thu, July 5, 2007 - 10:13 AMThe city is full of "self-important people" - some truly are, some are not. But the attitude prevails, so I do understand what you are getting at. However I don't let that stuff get under my skin any more. DC is a little over the top with attitude because of it being a political hub and what not, but you'll find that kind of stuff in most major American cities.
I've lived in many beautiful cities both in Europe and in the United States. I think DC rivals any one of them.

Re: Q, What do you "Love " about DC?
Fri, August 24, 2007 - 7:44 AMI don't talk to those people. and i avoid places they congregate.
I think it's sad for those who don't get outside that "scene". DC is a great city!

Re: Q, What do you "Love " about DC?
Wed, August 22, 2007 - 1:01 PMOK , please allow me to Rant a bit here...
maybe it is just downtown living, but so many people seem to think they are the only personl in the world, oblivious to anyone or anything else going on around them...beyond bad manners and inconsiderate behavior,... not to mention their inept abilities to do the job they are being payed to do seems to abound in every place i seem to go.... way beyond goverment...every layer of everything...not to mention the "average" person i meet is so consertive and uptight, their butt could turn coal into diamonds...
maybe it is just me, but people really just aren't friendly at all- and if they are it is because they want something from you... users and parasites...
"oh but the culture"-- yeah, homeless mental derranged crack heads screaming on every other street at all hours of day and night - DC culture-- "the museams"-- filled with collections of mostly white men, taken from the underclass and poor.....throngs of midwest tourists riding in busses fuming tons of toxic pollution making the air unbreathable (an hour outside downtown is like smoking an entire pack of cig's) --"the parks"-ok -they are nice, but the park police- no loitering, no kites, stay on the trails..etc... "the living"--the rats, mice, roaches, and bed bugs infesting nearly every vestabule of afordable housing--"the scene"-- the TOQS croud....the crystal meth heads.... the my shat don't stink , but yours does folks...name brand-label obsessed... "the opportunities"-- the ignorance --the crime---the filth --the greed--the poverty... the gray dispair in the faces and depths of the mindless drones trugging back and forth to/from a job that nearly each one hates -to the very core of their being... the masses of materialism addicted morans, buying china's cheap slave labor made crap that they do NOT need in any real way shape or form, just to make up for the dark empty feeling they have deep inside ....the vacant wish to own somthing that makes their sad little lives matter....their pathetic closed mind and lives--head stuck so far up their own behind, they can't smell- ignoring the signs--- "whats not to love"...its so getto faboulous! -- and lets not even get me started on/into politics....yeah, i love DC -- hope springs eternal -- from the cess pool of humanity, now hated by the majority of the rest of the world.
And somebody PLEASE tell me why people Really seem to hate it when i am open, upbeat, happy and having a good time, in spit of everything, like "how dare I!"
Thanks for letting me share, and geting that off my chest.
Blessed be -

Greenness
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 6:37 PMI love all the green space along the Potomac River and the C&O Canal. The view of the river from Key bridge looks like a scene from some great wilderness! The wildlife preservation areas along the canal in Maryland are teeming with wildlife and breathtaking beauty.
I just wish the river wasn't stinky and unclean half the time.

The Theater!
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 6:46 PM... the kind where you watch your tax dollars at work. I finally got around to going to see the Supremes (as in Court) do their oral arguments shtick, and went to a Senate hearing for a real-life "Thank You For Smoking" where a Florida agribusiness front man tried defending their record on migrant worker slavery.
You'll laugh! You'll cry! You'll cringe in horror as you realize that it's REAL, and that there's no leaving this theater; what you see here will follow you into your life. Shows are almost every day, and they're free!
I'm serious, this is a must do. I'm going to be going to lots more of these things. Can't believe it took me five years of living here to finally go do it.
Cheers! -
