Ott - Live Performance! (Psychedelic Dub)

Ott from Twisted Records will be performing Live in Washington, DC. On tour in support of his recent album, 'Skylon', Ott is no stranger to the studio, he has for the last 20 years been producing, arranging and recording some of the most famous artists including Sinead O'Connor, The Orb, and Brian Eno. He continues to work with many famous artists and along his travels has met up with Twisted Records own master producer Simon Posford aka Hallucinogen, editing Shpongle. After hearing his studio skills Simon commissioned him to make this (Blumenkraft -- Ott's first album) modern dub album as an antithesis to his own hurtling trance music. The results are as you shall see are startling, a stunning example of modern dub and one that is massive with all dance music and ambient music fans across the globe.

In the last 5 years, the improvements in software and hardware have given maestro's like Ott even more scope to toy with and more quality in the results. A fresh bag of tricks you might say! You can expect unique modern electro-acoustic dubs with generous spatterings of indigenous sounds from around the world ladled into the mix. But that's not all, there are a few tracks straying beautifully into different genres whilst maintaining the laid back but up beat dub vibe that we know and love.

Add that to the usual mind-blowing production, arrangement, song writing skills and jaw-dropping effects combos and you've got a sonic feast emanating from your speakers. His use of melody is perfectly balanced between too much and too little, creating a saturated but not overwhelming wall of emotive sound. We've said it before and we'll say it again, the man is a genius.

Costumes in DC

For those who haven't heard, I managed to obtain the inventory of a
costume rental store that went out of business. The costumes are sitting
in my living room and basement, and I need to get rid of them, they're
taking up too much space in my place.

There are many bargains to be had: Masks, Fur, Boas, Dresses,
Skirts, Leotards, Gowns, Ballroom dresses, Togas,
Hats, Fishnets, Tights, Fishnet Gloves, and so forth.

There are many cloaks, as well as Angel, Pirate, Prisoner,
Clown, Surgeon, Indian, Western, ruffled shirts,
royalty (Storm Troopers), skeletons, angels,
monk, among other categories too numerous to name. I have many
dress coats and dress slacks.

Many of costumes are high end, meant for rental, but there are also
others are cheap and disposable, all priced to move. Most costumes
are adult sized, but there are some children's costumes.

Accessories include canes, tails, swords, spears, bows, knives, pipes,
badges, fans, masquerade masks, garters, leggings,
light sabres, vibrating hands, spiders, snakes, bugs, pirate hooks,
scythes, noses, teeth, ears, spurs, dealy boppers,
Elephant ears, pig ears, Bunny ears, devils pitchforks & costumes.

Boas are in Blue & Green.

There are some Halloween supplies and decorations as well as
ghost buster plates.

There is an incredible selection of wigs available--Marilyn Monroe,
Marge Simpson, Raggedy Anne, Pony tails
as well as spiked wigs, long hair, mullets, extra long hair,
Red, Blue, Green, Purple, Multi-Colored. Bleach Blond, Brunette and
everywhere in between,
All kinds of beards as well--Cave Man Beard, Uncle Sam goatees, and many
others.

This is just a small sampling of the diversity of the costumes that are
present.

Discounts for multiple purchases, there are many freebies as well.

Bicycle-Sharing Program to Be First of Kind in U.S.

WASHINGTON — Starting next month, people here will be able to rent a bicycle day and night with the swipe of a membership card.

A new public-private venture called SmartBike DC will make 120 bicycles available at 10 spots in central locations in the city. The automated program, which district officials say is the first of its kind in the nation, will operate in a similar fashion to car-sharing programs like Zipcar.

The district has teamed up with an advertiser, Clear Channel Outdoor, to put the bikes on the streets.

“There’s a lot of stress on our transit systems currently,” said Jim Sebastian, who manages bicycle and pedestrian programs for Washington’s Transportation Department. Offering another option, Mr. Sebastian said, “will help us reduce congestion and pollution,” as well as parking problems.

In the deal, Clear Channel will have exclusive advertising rights in the city’s bus shelters. The company has reached a similar deal with San Francisco. Chicago and Portland, Ore., are also considering proposals from advertisers.

For a $40 annual membership fee, SmartBike users can check out three-speed bicycles for three hours at a time. The program will not provide helmets but does encourage their use.

Similar programs have proved successful in Europe. The Vélib program in Paris and Bicing in Barcelona, Spain, both started around a year ago and already offer thousands of bicycles.

Mr. Sebastian, who started trying to bring bike-sharing to Washington even before its success in Paris and Barcelona, said he believed that the program could grow within a year and hoped that it would eventually offer 1,000 bicycles.

While automated bike-sharing programs are new to the United States, the idea of bike-sharing is hardly novel. Milan, Amsterdam and Portland have all had lower-tech free bike-sharing programs in the past, with Amsterdam’s dating to the 1960s.

But “studies showed that many bikes would get stolen in a day, or within a few weeks,” said Paul DeMaio, a Washington-area bike-sharing consultant. “In Amsterdam, they would often find them in the canals.”

Improved technology allows programs to better protect bicycles. In Washington, SmartBike subscribers who keep bicycles longer than the three-hour maximum will receive demerits and could eventually lose renting privileges. Bicycles gone for more than 48 hours will be deemed lost, with the last user charged a $200 replacement fee.

That technology comes with a price, which is one reason cities and advertisers started joining forces to offer bike-sharing. The European programs would cost cities about $4,500 per bike if sponsors did not step in, Mr. DeMaio said.

Cities realize “they literally have to spend no money on designing, marketing or maintaining” a bike-sharing program, said Martina Schmidt of Clear Channel Outdoor. Washington will keep the revenue generated by the program.

Bike-sharing has become a “public service subsidized by advertising,” said Bernard Parisot, the president and co-chief executive officer of JCDecaux North America, an outdoor advertiser that made a proposal to bring bike-sharing to Chicago.

But, Mr. Parisot added, if users had to pay all of the costs for bike-sharing, “they would probably just take a cab.”

The low cost could be one of the program’s major selling points.

At George Washington University in Foggy Bottom, one of the program’s 10 locations, students were unsure how often they would use SmartBike, but said its price made it worth a try.

“I’d probably use it more in the summer than winter,” said Dewey Archer, a senior. “But for $40? That’s cheaper than gas.”

Grieving is a natural gift of human nature. We are born with a wonderful ability to express our feelings. When we have reached adulthood most of us have had great cause to grieve for lost loved ones, broken dreams, failed careers, and relationship crises. It is generally accepted (science has proven) that repressing emotions can lead to ill health. We know that unexpressed grief will burrow its way deep into the subconscious/psyche, numbing our feelings and disconnecting us from life itself. And yet we, as a culture, fail to support the expression of grief. There are so few places where it is acceptable to express our deepest feelings.

This weekend will offer you the opportunity to work alongside Sobonfu Some and experience the Dagara grief tradition of her West African culture. We will embark on a journey as a village, building sacred places in the stunning nature of Jefferson, Maryland that will provide a place to absorb our unresolved feelings of grief and loss.
Sobonfu will share her personal experiences and the wisdom of her tribe, showing us how to overcome the blockages that keep us trapped. She will assist each participant to draw on personal and collective images and stories, working in groups, using the rhythm of drums, song and dance, to facilitate this process.

The ancient teachings of the Dagara people as shared through Sobonfu will provide a deeply powerful and safe space to support the release of our anger, fear, guilt, numbness, indifference, frustration and grief about all the losses we have endured in this lifetime.

This experience will enable us to regain a lasting sense of connectedness with ourselves, our community, and with spirit, leading us to self-discovery and self-mastery,

Egyptian Cane Combinations
Raqs Al Assaya, a cheerful dance from the Sa’id (Upper Egypt), the dancer twirls a cane in playful imitation of the men’s regional martial art. (The men’s version, Tahtihb, is performed with heavy staffs.) Raqs Al Assaya may be presented as folkloric dance, or elements of this dance may be adapted for cabaret-style Oriental dance. Elysa will teach basic cane vocabulary, fun combinations and a short Sa’idi choreography. Students need to provide canes for class. A few canes will be available for purchase at the studio.

When I read the news in September about the Dupont 5 closing ["The Last Show in Dupont Circle," Business], I thought it was all a long time away, that having so much warning would somehow make it easier.

I was wrong.

For some happy years I worked just below Dupont Circle. On Fridays I would leave work at 4 p.m., and my husband and I would go to a movie. We were what the British call "spoiled for choice": We had so many small, art house movie theaters we could walk to. There were several in the Dupont Circle area and more in the West End. For the three years we went to Friday movies, only once did we have to go outside the Dupont-West End neighborhoods for a good film.

Now, I work at home and my husband works until 4 p.m. We go to movies on the weekends and holidays. All but one of those small theaters is gone, and the remaining one closes today. Now in Washington, we have more movie screens but fewer movie theaters.

That doesn't sound bad until you consider that fewer theaters means fewer neighborhoods with movie theaters (after tonight the Dupont Circle area will have none). There isn't much difference in the size of the screens, so soon there won't be as much variety in the type of movies. Also, the multiplexes often reduce the number of films they show by putting a film on more than one screen.

And when theaters close, we lose not only the theater but also the shape and feel and look of a neighborhood, usually for chain stores and restaurants that could be found anywhere in this country.

Big multiplexes are designed for the suburbs. They require a lot of space, and this is a city that no longer has much of that. One of the pleasures of living in a city is being able to walk or take public transit. What is the only way, other than walking or taking a cab, to get to the biggest multiplex in Washington? You must drive to Georgetown. You must act like a suburbanite.

I don't go above Dupont Circle much these days; I've read that it's changing from small shops owned by local people into a strip of chains. I like my chains local and independent. And the only reason I will have to go below Dupont Circle once the theater closes is Olsson's Books & Records.

Dupont Circle has been suffering in recent years (read: more chains, less character), and I don't think that the closing of its only remaining movie theater (for a retail store) is going to reverse that trend.

We need another art and independent movie theater near a Metro station showing movies that the theater on E Street NW -- all the more beloved to us now -- isn't showing. I love Netflix, but it's just not the same as watching a movie in the dark with strangers. (The Landmark people, who operate the E Street moviehouse, understand what city multiplexes need to be like.)

Every day, we lose another piece of this city, and it's not just movie theaters. We need to value our entire past, not just the government and places where "history" happened. Washington is a unique place. Isn't it time we treated it like one?

(2 year term).
What does it mean to be a Board member?
Required:
1) A love/passion for Arabic/Turkish/Romani/Balkan music – any one of these is
fine.
2) Ability to work well with others, to voice opinions and demonstrate
leadership but also to be able to come to consensus for the good of/goals of the community
3) Ability to attend 4-6 meetings a year in the Balto/Wash area. YOU DO NOT HAVE
TO BE LOCAL TO BE ON TEH BOARD, though it helps to be committed to programming in our
local area (we are incorporated in Montgomery County but serve the greater
Baltimore/Washington area)! If you are unable to physically attend meetings,
you can attend via phone/internet.

Desired qualifications:
We would love to have new Board members with any of the following skills, but
they are NOT necessary:
Knowledge of nonprofit law &/or tax law
Marketing/Networking skills
Fundraising/Grant writing skills

For those interested in volunteering:
We especially need help with ongoing video/photo projects and documentation of our events. We are also seeking an administrative assistant to help a few hours a week. These positions are not paid, but can be used for college community service & experience.

WMFC is committed to presenting quality music performances/workshops,

More Than A Resolution

Must we resolve what we are already doing? To resolve means we haven't reached our intention, or, that we are creating a new intention; it means we are striving to meet and reach an ideal.

The ideal we hold is why we resolve to change our actions, thoughts, and hence current situation; this is accomplished through an accumulated force of will meant to propel us in a new direction. Today propel onto a new path and internalize the resolution; doing so means it fuses with your every waking and sleeping moment.

Resolve only until it becomes a part of your nature then drop the resolution.

More than a resolution,
the intention must be to change the very nature of our being, therefore, making us congruent with whom we strive to be.

Be.

Resolve to accept yourself for who you are. Remember: no one is ever perfect. Accept the dynamism of change. Experience a growth which cannot be calculated. Situations do not remain the same and as the environment around us shifts, we must open to transform the resolutions once needed… for even they shall one day become obsolete or counter-productive.

Resolve to not be disappointed, overly critical or difficult upon what you do and have done.
If we fix upon a goal and don't reach it we lead ourselves to disappointment.

Dynamic resolutions assist in preventing this occurrence.
Static resolutions do not.

Accept all the good and the bad... accept that which you cherish and that which you despise. Move into a space of acceptance; release from self-judgment. Guilt is not healthy, instead embrace change and create alternatives. Move past the limiting idea of failure. Move into a constant state of embracing every moment... and then become open... to all experiences... open to all that arises and passes.

Look at yourself. Discover your fears. Understand your faults. Reach for the zenith and don't be afraid to fall. Fall down. Stand back up. Embrace falling, it is necessary to learn walking.

Challenge even your resolutions, hence reaching awareness of self.

Avoid causing the self pain by sticking to a resolution that may no longer be relevant. As the conscious intention penetrates into your being, resolve to not blindly cling to resolutions without understanding their meaning; instead, embrace your true nature through awareness of who you are... the change sought is dependent on self-realization.

The change is dependent upon acceptance,
internalizing it so that it becomes more than just a resolution.

Petworth?

I'll be looking for an apartment after New Years. Saw an ad for a sweet apartment about a block from the Petworth Metro station on New Hampshire, but I am not familiar with the neighborhood.

Wondering what your opinion is regarding the Petworth neighborhood.
